Montgomery Ward
Montgomery Ward was built in 1928 at 1700 Charleston Avenue. The site had been vacant since the Methodist Church fire in 1901. The building was four storied with a terra cotta facade. In 1970, the phone company took over the entire building. They had occupied the top floors for years. The terra cotta facade was removed and replaced with glass and steel panels. A fifth floor was also added to the building. The building was renamed the Lumpkin Building.
The buildings to the west were eventually demolished for increased parking and the west side of the Montgomery Ward Building renovated to face the parking lot. |
