
Post Office
Congress appropriated $70,000 in 1910 for the construction of a new post office in Mattoon. The City had outgrown its facilities at the Virginia Building on Broadway and moved to this building at1701 Charleston upon its completion in October of 1913. It remained there until 1981 when the current facility was built.
The building sat empty for a few years until the phone company renovated it into office space. In 2000, they donated to the school district for their administrative offices. While moving their offices here secures the stability of this building, it contributes to the endangerment of Central School where they were located
