U.S. Grant Hotel

Mattoon was known for its grand hotels.  From the Essex House, to the Dole House.  From Hotel Byers to the U.S. Grant.  In 1929, the City of Mattoon built this six-story hotel on Charleston Avenue. It was the tallest building in town.

When traffic was diverted to Interstate 57, the need for downtown hotels declined.  Hotel Byers (then known as Broadway Hotel) closed in 1971 and was razed in 1974.  The U.S. Grant was converted to apartments and still stands today.
